Ireland does lags behind other European countries. While most urban
areas (cities and major towns) are very well mapped with full street-level mapping that allows you to
navigate to a specific address, there are significant
gaps in rural areas with
most GPS systems providing little or no coverage for minor roads. This means, for example,
that you will be able to navigate to any town in Ireland, say 'Naas', but unlike Dublin, Cork, Limerick etc.,
it is most likely that you will not be able to navigate to an
address in Naas, say '23 Woodfield Close'.
This situation is changing and by
the end of 2006-early 2007
it should be possible to purchase map updates for GPS systems that will have full 100% coverage for
Ireland.
The GPS systems with the best coverage for Ireland are those based on NAVTEQ
mapping techology. This includes, for example, the full range of GPS automotive and PDA/PC products
supplied by Garmin and
GPS software bundles
from Alturion™.
The popular Navman and
TomTom GPS products use Tele Atlas map data so unfortunately are not suitable
for use in rural Ireland.
